Mayda is a town that appears in the book A Web of Air.

It is a harbour city, built inside an old impact crater somewhere off the coast of PortugaI. It is haunted by mutant seagulls, spies and assassins. In the town there is a race to develop a flying machine and a boy who can talk to Angels.

Geography[]

Mayda-at-World's End is a Static Settlement somewhere near modern-day Portugal. It is known as at-World's End because it is a coastal city, and the ocean leads to the Dead Continent, so Humanity has not explored further. The town itself is built inside a massive crater from the Sixty Minute War, and is full of flash houses, hotels, restaurants and a large harbour. It also consists of funiculars, which inspired the elevators on the Traction City of London. The town is also a habitat to Angels, which are talking birds.

Outside of the main crater there are the Ragged Isles, which consist of many islands, including Thursday Island.

History[]

Pre-Sixty Minute War[]

Before the Sixty Minute War, Mayda was most likely just ocean, therefore uninhabited.

A Web of Air[]

One day, on Thursday Island, the young Arlo Thursday was doing his daily jobs when the Angels warned him of a big wave. Sure enough, a wave could be seen in the distance. Arlo survived, but his family wasn't so lucky.

Years Later, Fever Crumb came to Mayda, travelling on the theatre barge the Lyceum. However, when hearing of how Arlo Thursday and his dreams to fly, Fever stayed in Mayda, and went to see Arlo multiple times, and they discussed the flying machine. However, Fat Jago Belkin and the Oktopus Cartel were after it.

Fever and Arlo fleed to Thursday Island. There, they continued to work on the machine, and even flew it, but when Fever disowned the machine to the high priestess Orca Mo (to save Arlo's life), Arlo left the city forever, as did Fever.
