Mortal Engines[]

Salthook was a small mining and trading town that roamed the northwesterly areas of the Great Hunting Ground. The small traction town was spotted by London's lookouts when it was gnawing at the salt flats of the dried-up North Sea, as the large predator was making its way back across the land bridge back into Europe. London began to bear down on the small town, and Salthook was making a lead until one of its drive wheels broke loose, crippling and ultimately dooming the town. It was consumed by London and broken up, with its population being absorbed into the city. A few airtraders were able to escape the town, implying it had an air quay.

In 1007 TE, Salzhaken was one of several mining towns joined together in a Trading Cluster to conduct business before being alerted to the great traction city London's approach. While the other towns quickly sped away, Salzhacken’s engines stalled, allowing London to close the gap between it and its prey. Salzhaken’s engines started just in time to cause London to give chase across the bed of the North Sea; unfortunately, the smaller mobile settlement had no reverse forcing its navigators to steer it into a U-turn by only a mile away from London, which was just opening up the Union Jack gate that covers the city's "jaws", before speeding away. Unfortunately, even after abandoning (could be dumping or losing) its huge payload of salt, Salzhaken’s attempt to flee was soon crippled by a combination of ravaged terrain and a lost [drive] wheel, which slowed it down long enough for London to capture it through its harpoon launchers. Unable to escape, Salzhaken was soon pulled towards the gaping jaws of London and into the city's Gut. While air traders managed to flee Salzhaken, the rest of its citizens were taken aboard the city for integration into London society. Among these was Hester Shaw, who attempted to assassinate Head Historian Thaddeus Valentine while the refugees were being processed.

Upon being fully cleared of its former residents, London's Gutworkers soon got to work breaking Salzhaken down into raw resources to fuel its engines. During this, Tom Natsworthy chased down Hester Shaw through the ongoing carnage, with the two barely managing to avoid being crushed by the carnage of saws or debris.
