St. Paul's Cathedral was a church that was introduced in Mortal Engines. It was a historical building in London prior to its destruction.

Description[]

St. Paul's was made of white stone. It had pillared aisles and high vaulted ceilings.[1]

When the Guild of Engineers took over, they had sheathed the walls in white metal and hung wire-caged argon globes from the ceilings. Fat electric cables snaked up the nave, feeding power to MEDUSA's brain in the heart of the cathedral.[1]

St. Paul's is made of white stone. While it resembles the one in real life, the aisles have been removed to accompany the ducts and wires that feed power to MEDUSA at the back of the church. When the superweapon was activated, it made the cathedral glow with blue-and-violet light.[2]

History[]

Pre-Series[]

Originally, it burnt down in the Great Fire of London. However, it was rebuilt in 1675, serving as the principle church for London, and the current design was planned by Sir Christopher Wren. It was famous for not being bombed a single time during World War II, despite the area around it being completely destroyed.

Somehow, it managed to survive the Sixty Minute War, and when London became a Traction City, the cathedral was transferred onto Tier 1 (Top Tier). It was used first as a museum before all artifacts were replaced to the Tier Three Guild of Historian's museum.

It may have become a place of worship, perhaps a pantheon of several Gods (though nothing to do with the God of Christianity), however it is not really known. Eventually, it was "closed" for repairs, possibly after damage from The Big Tilt (in fact, preparing for something far larger).

Mortal Engines[]

The Guild of Engineers were in fact building the foundations for the MEDUSA inside. Hester Shaw was taken inside after being dropped off by Tom Natsworthy to assassinate Thaddeus Valentine. It is presumed after MEDUSA imploded and destroyed almost all of London that St Paul's did not survive (it was significantly ruined by the time of A Darkling Plain). It was also stated several times that the stone building had been rather rattled by London's traction journeys and so was already vulnerable.
