In the Bleak Midwinter is a short story written by Philip Reeve. It was the first collaboration between Reeve and Sarah McIntyre, both of whom would write children books.

This short story is set years before Mortal Engines, following Hester Shaw and Shrike aboard the town of Twyne.

SummaryEdit

After killing a bank robber on behalf of Mayor Pilbeam, Shrike and Hester return to the town of Twyne to collect their bounty. They find the city celebrating the festival of Midwinter.

Pilbeam, accompanied with two slavers from the Shkin Corporation, ambush Shrike and trap him a net. Hester cuts down a festive pine tree, crushing the assailants.

Shrike frees himself, and together with Hester enters the Town Hall. They find a warm fireplace and food, and Shrike attempts to tell a Midwinter story about a girl with a dog. Noticing his difficulty, Hester reminisces on the day instead.
