The Middle Sea is a place that was introduced in Infernal Devices. It is located below Europa, and above the Great Sand Sea. In Ancient times, it was known as the Mediterranean Sea.

History[]

Pre-Series[]

Early in the Traction Era, before traction cities even existed, the Middle Sea was known as a great "Zagwan Pond", as was controlled by the Zagwan Empire and it's allies, and was full of war-galleys. However, after the defeat of the Zagwan Empire by Traction Cities during the Zagwan Deluge at 520 TE, the Middle Sea became full of small, motorized fishing and trading towns. But then, Urbivores such as Marseilles and Stamboul consumed most of the small villages inhabiting the Middle Sea. Eventually, some larger trading towns, tired of being chased around in the Middle Sea, gnawed their way through the Isthmus of Suez, and escaped to the Indian Ocean. Too big to fit through the newly created Suez Canal, many Urbivores just left the Middle Sea after this, searching for new prey in the Atlantic. This left the Middle Sea full of mostly Pleasure Cities, such as Brighton and Venice.
